April 19, 2011

Time spent: 2 hours
Total time: 22hours
Actions I performed: Today was presentations day in the class so we went over their group projects on their biographies of their famous or popular person. Since today was going to be one of my last times there doing my mentoring, at munch we went over the songs that I learned from a while back since I haven't been keeping up with my community service hours.
Next Actions: Next time If i do come back, It's going to be because of my senior project presentations because I was thinking of doing total communication for the introduction of my presentation.
How am I doing: Overall, I felt like I learned a lot from Mr. Oshita's class. I felt like the way he taught helped me learn quick and I'm pretty satisfied with how well I did and how he involved me in his class and I grew more comfortable with my environment. I'm glad I chose ASL as my senior project because I feel like it's something I can later learn more about.

April 18, 2011

Time spent: 2 hours
Total time: 20 hours
Actions I performed: Today we played games and went over autobiographies of different asl people in history that were important
Next action: Next time we're going to do presentations
How am I doing: I think that some of the mentor stuff we've been doing havent been actually learning about sign language but its been nice learning new things about different people in society that helped the sign language culture. and also I'll be participating in the sign language presentations and trying to do some signs to practice.

April 17, 2011 (community)

Time spent: 2.5 hours
Total: 7.5 hours
Actions I performed today: Today, I worked with the older classes which was the kindergarten and pre school classes. Today I performed and taught them ...

This little light of mine
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!

Jesus Loves Me**
Jesus loves me
, this I know, For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong, They are weak but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me, The Bible tells me so.

How am I doing? :

I feel like I'm starting off new because its a different class that I'm teaching, but im more comfortable with where I'm at now because I feel like I'm actually teaching kids that are able to understand and learn whats going on, and they actually remember and know the songs so its easier to teach. They have a hard time remembering every sign, but as long as I do it with them, they do pretty well.

April 15, 2011

Time spent: 1.5 hours
Total time: 18hours
Actions I performed: Today we took a quiz today on the objects in the house and where to locate them through signing. After the quiz we also went over the whole vocabulary just to review if we got any wrong.
Next action: Next time I'm here, I think we're going to go through presentations of popular people in the deaf culture.
How am I doing: After taking the quiz, I felt really satisfied with my performance. Since we corrected the quizzes after, I got one of the highest grades in the class 17/20. It wasn't too high but compared to the rest of the class, I felt satisfied. It was confusing distinguishing where in the house things were located which was my downfall but I'm happy with how I did. The quiz really showed me how well I'm learning

April 13, 2011

Time spent: 1.5 hours
Total time: 16.5hours
Actions I performed: Today I took notes on the 3 Different types of Interpretations which are total communication, translation, and captioning.
Next action: We're taking all these notes to prepare the class for a quiz coming up, I'm not sure if I'll be there next time but if I'm not I'll still get a copy of the quiz to take just to see how well I'm learning.
How am I doing: Like I said in a previous blog, It's nice learning concepts of signing and not just cutting straight to the point. Although we didn't do much signing today and learning vocabulary, we went over how signing and speaking is difficult because half of your brain is being used to sign, and the other to speak. We went over the difference between translation and interpretation again. and We also went over why it's so difficult to do signing especially if you have a different first language that you speak. Even though we didn't do much today, I like learning the "behind the scenes" of signing.

March 13, 2011

Today, I talked to my youth leader and she told me that next time i come, I could just help out in the Pre-school to Kindergarten grades because they're more susceptible to learn the songs and signs I teach them in sign language and hopefully I can play games with them. I'm glad I'm getting more options to finish my hours because I'm starting to worry that I won't finish everything in time, but I'll just see how everything goes in the Pre-school to Kindergarten class and how well I communicate with them.

March 12, 2011

I am pretty much finished with all my mentoring hours, all I really need to focus on most is my community service hours. I started working with the nursery children for two Sundays which gives me roughly 10 more hours until I complete all my hours. The nursery hasn't been working out for me because the children are too young. I feel like they're not understanding what I teach them and they just mostly stare so I'm going to talk to a youth leader again to find more options I can do to fulfill my community service hours

March 2 2011

Time spent: 2 hours
Total:13hrs
Actions I performed: Today, since I didn't have school, I joined his class and we went over their study guide final. We discussed the difference between interpretation and translation and we also talked about popular people in deaf culture society.
Next actions: I'm not sure whens the next time I'll be back again but hopefully its after school and we have one-on-one mentoring together and we can go over more songs for the nursery
How am I doing: I think I'm doing well, as for his classroom, I feel like I've caught up and understand alot of the material that they have been going over and learning in class when I wasn't here. It's interesting learning the concepts of signing and not just cutting straight to the point of signing.

February 20, 2011 (community)

Time Spent: 2.5hour
Total: 5 hours
Actions I performed: Today I performed more songs again such as...

The B-I-B-L-E
Oh! The B-I-B-L-E,

Yes that's the book for me.
I stand alone on the word of God,
the B-I-B-L-E!

Go Tell It On The Mountain
Go tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere,
Go tell it on the mountain,
Our Jesus Christ is born.

Today, I also taught words like "hungry" "play" "please" "thank you"& "bathroom" to the children.

How am I doing?:
I think next time I do my community service, I'm just going to move onto the higher classes because right now, I'm just doing the same thing as the first time I worked in the nursery. The children just stared at me or was playing and didn't really pay attention to my sign language to the songs, but the "please" "thank you" and "play" came in handy today because in a way I forced them to do the signs by making them say 'please' in sign language if they wanted something.

Feb 18, 2011

Time spent: 1.5 hours
Total: 11 hours
Actions I performed:
Today I learned more songs in addition to last weeks songs to teach to the toddlers in Sunday school such as...

The B-I-B-L-E
Oh! The B-I-B-L-E,

Yes that's the book for me.
I stand alone on the word of God,
the B-I-B-L-E!

Go Tell It On The Mountain
Go tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere,
Go tell it on the mountain,
Our Jesus Christ is born.

How am I doing?:

I’m doing pretty well ! It’s easy learning Sunday school nursery songs because they’re all mostly repetitive and with the songs that I have been learning since last week, two songs have spelling in it, so memorizing my alphabet really does come in handy. I’m really glad that I remember all the songs especially from last week. Learning these songs are fun because it real easy to learn and it’s fun reminiscing on nursery songs.

Febrary 13, 2011 (community)

Time Spent: 2.5 hour
Total: 2.5 hours
Actions I performed: Today I performed these songs to the nursery kids...

I am a C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N
I am a C C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N
And I have C-H-R-I-S-T
In my H-E-A-R-T
And I will L-I-V-E E-T-E-R-N-A-L-L-Y!

Jesus loves the little children**
Jesus loves the little children

All the children of the world; Red and yellow, black and white,
They are precious in his sight; Jesus loves the little children of the world.

How am I doing?:

I'm not sure if I'm doing so well with my community service. I'm not that well satisfied with the audience I'm performing for them and teaching because I feel like they're too young to understand the signs I give them for the song, and I also don't really think they even understand what I'm saying if I'm singing while signing. Next time I think I'm just going to cut down the songs and just use simple words like "bathroom" "hungry" "play" "thirsty" etc.

February 8, 2011

Time Spent: 2 hour
Total: 9.5 hours
Actions I performed: Today I learned specific songs to teach the toddlers at my church such as...

I am a C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N
I am a C C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N
And I have C-H-R-I-S-T
In my H-E-A-R-T
And I will L-I-V-E E-T-E-R-N-A-L-L-Y!

Jesus loves the little children

All the children of the world; Red and yellow, black and white,
They are precious in his sight; Jesus loves the little children of the world.

How am I doing?:

I think I’m doing great. Learning these songs are really fun because they are all songs that I grew up with as a child and the signs aren’t so complex that I can’t understand it. The songs are also really easy to remember and because I already learned the alphabet from last week, it really helped me do the “I am a CHRISTIAN” song because it’s all mostly spelling involved and that song also helped me practice my alphabet.

February 1, 2011

Time spent: 2 hours
Total: 7.5 hours
Actions I performed: Today I followed every sign Mr. Oshita did for the "Lord's Prayer" and he also gave me a packet on how to do it so if I was interested in memorizing it and performing it at there mass, I was welcomed to.I also learned words that are most likely to be used in church such as...
  • faith
  • Bible
  • Hallelujah
  • Jesus
  • God
  • children
  • Prayer
  • Lord
  • King
  • Queen
and also words that pertained most to communicating with toddlers such as...
  • play
  • eat
  • hungry
  • bathroom
  • teacher
  • tell me
  • ask
  • girl/woman
  • boy/man
How am I doing: I think its starting to become a little bit more difficult. Understanding and learning the signs in ASL aren’t hard at all because it makes sense to me, but remembering it and memorizing it for later use is what’s going to be most hard for me especially since I’m only seeing Mr. Oshita only once or twice a week and it’s harder to review since I can’t just write it down to remember, I have to actually picture it in my head.

January 31, 2011

Time spent: 1.5 hours
Total: 5.5hrs
Actions I performed:
Today we went over the Alphabet and Numbers. We also went over the concepts to differ a noun and a verb.
Next actions: We discussed the our next time together would be spent on sunday school nursery songs to teach toddlers.
How am I doing:
I think I'm doing pretty well for the beginning of everything, but maybe because it's just the basic materials. Today wasn't fully planned and we weren't sure of what to do for my first day of mentoring one-on-one, but we just went along with it and I got to learn simple things that should be known.

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

January 26, 2011

Time spent: 4 hours Total time: 4 hours Actions I performed: Today I took notes on how to sign numbers and letters. After half an hour we reviewed then played a game of bingo until the end of the block. Next action: Next time we are going to review more bigger numbers than just the numbers 1-20 and we are also going to spell words. How am I doing: I think I'm doing pretty well. The class is a little too fast for me since I came in somewhere in the emester and I have to learn what they learned as fast as I can by observing them review and play games. I think it's a challenge for me to learn quickly, but since ASL does signs that somewhat pertain to the meaning/action of the word, it makes it easier to remember.

The Bluest Eye XIV

Even though I dont completely understand the way the author organized the chapters of the book, I think it is very interesting. Some chapters begin with seasons of the year while other chapters begin with repetitive lines of a story that is told in the beginning of the novel. It's very interesting and I think the author does this to separate the stories of Claudia and the things she goes through presently in the book and the other chapters as things she has experienced.

The Bluest Eye XIII

So far my favorite character in the novel is Pecola because she is so innocent and is although wants something, if it doesnt work out or nothing goes right, she is just an innocent little girl who cant to anything about it. The scene where Maureen runs off made me want to just hug Pecola because even though Maureen and Freida are fighting, Pecola can't do anything about it and she just seems so helpless.

The Bluest Eye XII

Maureen's character is very friendly. After the scene where Pecola is being bullied and Freida comes to the rescue, when they are all walking together, Maureen is like the friend you always wanted to keep you on the positive side. She was a good person to talk to and she was willing to just be a friend to hang out with.

The Bluest Eye XI

The scene that impresses me a lot of the part when Freida yells at the boys when she sees that they are taunting innocent little Pecola. It revealed that Freida's character is bold and is willing to do whatever it takes to do something and she is not scared. It also revealed that they all are united and if one is falling or going through something, ALL of them will fight for that person.
